For many, Mother’s Day can be an extremely tough day and for some, perhaps the one day of the year they dread the most. There are so many reasons why it can be hard – someone may have lost a mother, someone may be having difficulty trying to conceive a child, some may celebrate their dad/dads who mean just as much as the mums, someone may have an estranged mother or someone could have joint custody of their child but don’t have them the weekend of Mother’s Day.

It’s not just the day either. It is the build-up, the constant reminders that leave some feeling uneasy and the social media channels inundated with smiling photographs of ‘traditional’ mother and child families.

Over the last few years, Others Day has been used to raise awareness for the people other than mothers and those who may not be the typical expectation of a mother, yet still deserve recognition. In 2020, it is important that we acknowledge that motherhood comes in all shapes and sizes.

If you know someone who Others Day may resonate with – someone who may not be a ‘traditional mother’ or someone who is missing that mother figure in their life, then perhaps think about celebrating Others Day with them.

Spread smiles this Others Day.
